Camp Dates: June 22nd – August 28th

As a Camp Counselor, you are not just supervising activities—you are a guide in each camper’s story, helping them overcome challenges like fear, loneliness, and self-doubt, and empowering them to thrive.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Assistant Camp Director, the Camp Counselor creates a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for campers ages 5–16. Counselors lead small and large group activities while fostering Achievement, Relationships, and Belonging (ARB)—the YMCA’s framework for youth development.

Counselors are responsible for a group of up to 15 campers and play a critical role in ensuring every child feels welcomed, valued, and supported.

WORK SEASON / HOURS:

  • Seasonal position (June–August)
  • Core hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • May be scheduled for:
  • Pre-Camp (7:00–9:00 AM)
  • Post-Camp (4:00–6:00 PM)
  • Participation in special events may be required
  • Consistent attendance is essential to support camper safety and experience

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Create a Transformational Camper Experience

  • Lead daily activities that help campers:
    • Achieve new skills and goals
    • Build relationships through teamwork and shared experiences
    • Develop belonging by feeling included and valued
  • Foster a fun, positive, and emotionally safe environment

Be the Most Welcoming Presence

  • Greet every camper and caregiver with warmth and enthusiasm
  • Ensure every child feels seen, heard, and included
  • Model YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility

Practice “Listen First” Engagement

  • Build strong relationships by actively listening to campers
  • Use open-ended questions to understand needs and interests
  • Support behavior with empathy, consistency, and clear expectations

Ensure Safety & Well-Being

  • Maintain constant supervision of assigned group
  • Respond to basic health needs (scrapes, hydration, sun safety, etc.)
  • Follow all safety procedures and infection prevention protocols
  • Keep materials and equipment safe and organized

Collaborate & Communicate

  • Maintain positive communication with families and staff
  • Report concerns and updates to the Assistant Camp Director
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings

Be Creative & Engaging

  • Plan and lead activities including games, arts, sports, and outdoor exploration
  • Bring energy, creativity, and joy to each day
  • Maintain a “rainy day kit” for flexible programming

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age: 17 years
  • Experience working with children in camp, childcare, or recreation
  • Ability to lead group activities (games, crafts, sports, etc.)
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and remain active throughout the day
