Job Description

Organization:  Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) FSH is a thriving youth development organization - the first to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership and academic achievement. For over 28 years, our award-winning afterschool and summer programs provide girls ages 6 to 18 from low-income communities with access to innovative education and health and wellness services that help them reach their fullest potential. Our vision is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams.

Position Description:  Figure Skating in Harlem is seeking a dedicated, experienced, and enthusiastic synchronized skating coach for the 2025–2026 season. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in synchronized skating, a working knowledge of the International Judging System (IJS), and a passion for mentoring young skaters (typically ages 12–18). This position plays a critical role in creating a positive team culture while building a competitive, skill-focused, and disciplined environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute age- and level-appropriate training plans aligned with USFS standards for synchronized skating at the Open Juvenile level
  • Choreograph programs that strategically maximize points under the IJS system and emphasize musicality, creativity, and team unity
  • Lead regular on-ice practices and off-ice conditioning sessions (schedule to be determined collaboratively)
  • Provide constructive individual and group feedback to skaters, supporting both technical growth and teamwork
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive, and motivating environment for skaters of varying experience levels
  • Communicate regularly with parents, team managers, and club leadership
  • Oversee and manage the team during travel and at competitions (local, sectional, and potentially national events)
  • Ensure compliance with SafeSport and all USFS policies
  • Collaborate with other club coaches and staff to support skater development and retention

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience coaching or competing in synchronized skating
  • Deep understanding of the IJS judging system as it applies to synchronized skating
  • Proven experience working with youth athletes ages 12–18; must be approachable, patient, and positive
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills
  • Experience in choreography, program construction, and technical element development
  • Must hold current USFS membership and Coaches' ICE coaching compliance credentials (including background check, SafeSport training, and continuing education credits)
  • Availability to attend all practices, competitions, and team events throughout the season
  • Ability to travel with the team and work flexible hours as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coaches' ICE accreditation
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Experience working collaboratively with assistant coaches, managers, and club boards
  • Past competitive coaching record at the sectional or national level
